A Collaborative Project

These renders were apart of a larger project that I worked along side other students to create a speculative monorail for The Pennsylvania State University to add to their campus. This project was meant to replace the bus system in order to create a better flow of traffic along with safer transportation for people taking the rails.

The largest portion that I contributed to the project was adding a station to the already existing Pattee and Paterno Library. This was meant to create a larger station that would replace an already popular bus stop. This station was meant to act as an extension to the library without trying to modify the already existing structure.

Along the render of the library station we presented a much up for the cars, 2D sketches of other stations, a quick render of the monorail flying through the real space, and some research on how the monorail could be a safer and more efficient means of transportation than the already existing bus system.

This video was created by Eric Shuey (one of my group mates) to show the positioning of the car in the real space

Features of my Design

One main issue I had when creating this new space was incorporating it into an already existing structure. The spot which I chose to plant the station on was chosen because of having a generally flatter area. On top of this roof is HVAC systems which I chose to just build over. I also chose to use the already existing elevators in the building and just extend those to create another floor

Ease of use was important to me as I was designing. I wanted to make sure that there were as few stall points as possible. Thats why I chose to position the rail in the middle. This gave equal boarding opportunity to people coming from the street and taking the stairs or people coming from inside the building who took the elevator. I also added the corridor to help break up the space and add more of a floor.

Another aspect that was important was the design. I wanted something that looked timeless and didn’t seem to take away from the historic image of the library as it is already a point of such pride. This design adds plenty of windows to create an open design and provide breathtaking views of campus while not taking away from the structure its built upon.
